Great Time

Great Time

Definitely a great moment where I had a great time and enjoy it to the max would be last’s year visit to Las Vegas. Although it was not the first time visiting Las Vegas, I must say that it was the best of all. We decided to go without actually planning it ahead of time, it was completely unplanned. We got to Las Vegas around 12 pm; it must have been in the 100’s because it was crazy hot. We started looking for a place to stay right away and luckily for us we found a room fairly quick in the main strip at Caesar’s Palace. We were all starving, so we went looking for something to eat.  After looking around we decided to eat at the buffet at Rio Hotel, not sure if it was because I was starving, but everything I tasted was super delicious. After eating like pigs we went to try our luck in the casinos and we were indeed very lucky because my girlfriend and I won 2300 dollars. Who wouldn’t be happy after winning that money, I don’t know if it was because we won or just because everything was so sporadic that made this trip so much fun. We went around trying new places in the strip and also went to a couple of shows (we had some extra money to spend thanks to the slot machinesJ).  We spend the whole weekend there and we sure were exhausted after the weekend came to an end. A lot of great memories and definitely fun times that we would remember for a long time, they are down to earth people who always find a way to have a great time no matter what.

Important People

Important People

I would be writing about three people who have been important to me and whom have helped me become a better person. The first of them is my dad Gilberto, a tall man with curly hair and a really strong character. He has been an important person in my life not only because he is my dad, but because he has taught me many things throughout my life. He taught me that family is the most precious gift and that sometimes you have to sacrifice many things to support your family. I have learned from him to never give up and to work hard.

The second person that has been really important in my life is my brother. His name is Gabriel, an extremely shy person, but with a tremendous generous hearth. He was the one that got me into playing soccer because we would always go play when we were kids. I really admire him because he was able to overcome an addiction to drugs. I know he was not a bad person, but drugs had a negative effect on him. He was going in the wrong path, but was able to overcome it and straighten his life. He has been important because I have learned that no matter what there is always hope ahead.

Lastly, I would mention my girlfriend Rebecca, a beautiful woman who has definitely been a blessed to me. She is tall (she is always on her heels) with long hair and an amazing body. She has a great personality; she is really outgoing and has always something that would make you laugh. Over the past three years we have been to many different places, just to mention a few. Las Vegas a couple times, Ensenada, Yucatan, Cancun and hopefully Europe next year. She has been really important not only because I have found a great woman, but because she has motivated me to go back to school and become a better person. I am just thankful to have these three people in my life, each of them have made an impact in my life and have help me become the person  I am today.

Chago Ahogadas

There’s this Mexican Restaurant in Los Angeles that has the best “tortas ahogadas” or salsa-drowned pork sandwiches, Chago Ahogadas. This is actually a franchise of an actual restaurant back in Guadalajara, so you know you are getting an original recipe torta ahogada. Tortas ahogadas is a native dish from my home state of Guadalajara, Jalisco made with a salsa made of tomato, ground and habanero pepper. These are the real deal they are authentic and taste just like the ones I have try back in Mexico. For those that like Mexican food and especially for those who like spicy food this will definitely satisfy your taste. The salsa use in the tortas is made of habanero pepper so you better watch out when eating one. They also have an authentic native drink called Tejuino, which is a cold drink made of ferment corn (masa) usually served with ice and lots of lemon juice. The only bad thing is that is an hour drive to get there, even though I think is all worth it.

The restaurant has a total Mexican atmosphere with Mariachi music in the background and paintings all over the walls. The service is great, the times that I have been there we always get the best service; they are always really polite and make you feel home. I just wish they had a restaurant near Oxnard, I have try tortas ahogadas around here and they don’t taste nothing like the ones from there. If you are that kind that likes to try new food I would definitely recommend this restaurant. Just remember; just be careful because it would burn you a lot…. this tortas are super spicy, but super delicious as well.

FAST FOOD NATION

Fast Food Nation

The book “Fast Food Nation” written by Eric Schlosser has definitely affected me after reading it. I wasn’t aware of all the practices they have in the meat market industry. For some reason I always thought that these meat companies had to go through constant inspections and that they had better practices. I think is sad to know how they really produce the meat that we eat at our fast food restaurants. Just to imagine and picture the way animals are killed, the brutality and abuse these poor animals have to go through has changed the way I see fast food restaurants now. I have never been a fast food lover, and now after reading fast food Nation I think I am going to think twice before I eat a hamburger. I know that for some people fast food is the only alternative they have due to lack of time, but I think that if more people were aware of the way their hamburgers are produced, they will do something about it. Personally, I will at least try to have better eating habits, because now every time I think about fast food these vivid pictures of how the animals are killed come to my mind.

There are certain events you go through in life that have a significant impact on you. Life is full of twists and turns, full of experiences and events that shaped you in a particular way. Many people can recall a specific event in their life that forever changed them.  These events become unforgettable memories, from which you are taught a lesson that lives in you forever. It was a cold morning, we were waiting in the terminal for the bus that was going to take to Tijuana. I could feel a sense of sadness in the air but it must have been my own sadness and fear of living everything behind. I was about to merge into an adventure that was going to change me and mark me from that moment on. My dad had decided that it was time for us to come to the United States, a decision which I had no control over, an event that was going to have a big impact on my personality and the way I was. I remember I would always be the first to raise my hand at school, really outgoing always trying to make my friends laugh. I was not afraid of talking in front of people nor embarrass of talking to anyone, a person that would stay behind after this drastic change. It would take me a while to finally accept that I was not going to go back to my country and that this was in fact going to be my new home, new friends and new things to learn awaiting ahead.

A huge problem I came across when I moved to this country was the language; it would have been totally different if I was younger when I first moved. A 15 year old teenager, with a set personality that felt he did not fit in. There were certain experiences throughout this event of moving places that molded me into a different person. Moving to another country was and it still is an event that has had a major impact in my life. Part of my personality of being embarrass or an extremely shy person at times is due to certain things that happen during this transition of adapting to new people, new culture and a new way of living. I can recall those times when people would make fun of me for not speaking the language or for pronouncing a word wrong.

My first day at school, how could I forget that day. It was around 8 am when we got there, my dad signed some papers and boom I was ready to go. I was waiting at the principal office and there were a group of kids standing next to me. One of them asked something, but of course I could not understand a word. My mind went blank,  I paused for a minute and all I could think of was “no hablo ingles”, I don’t know what was so funny about it but they all started laughing; I got all red and just got out of there. I stood outside until my teacher came to take me to class. A big classroom with posters all over the walls, she introduced me to class and the “American dream” had begun for me. At first, I was kind of nervous, did not know what to expect. This was an ESL class, so we were all in the same page trying to learn a new language. But, everything changed when I had to enroll in normal classes for my sophomore year. No more ESL classes for me, even though I knew I was not ready there I was.

Monday morning, a test coming up, a presentation was due. I would hate when I had to talk in front of the class. There were many times where I felt really bad because some of my classmates would make fun of me, time went by and my attitude towards started to change. Without noticing my personality and my way acting with others started to change.  I had being molded into a person I was not before, a lack of confidence existed within me. What I would do most of the time I would just go to class, do my work and not talk to anyone. From being that outgoing kid who would always wanted to stand up in class, this shy and timid guy had evolved. Sometimes is hard to believe how a single event can have a major impact in you, with time I have learned to careless about what people say. As time has gone by, I have tried to better myself for my own good, a reason why I am back here trying to pass this class.  This is my second time I enrolled in this class; the first time was a few years ago. Why did I drop it the first time? Because I was afraid, did not want to take the challenge. But, in order for me to get better I have to face my fears, face and defeat those little things that exist within myself that make me act certain way.

Today I can say that I have two sides to my personality, I could be that same person that I used to be whenever I am surrounded by people I know I can trust. But in the other hand I learned to be certain way throughout my experience of adapting to a new culture that is hard to leave behind. I am still in the process of learning the language, sometimes it gets tough but I need to keep trying. When I was growing up I never picture myself living anywhere else, nor having to learn a new language. All this event of moving to a new place did indeed had a major impact in me, maybe I got molded into someone I never thought I would be. But, before I would only see the negative things about it, I became this or I became that due to this change. Now I see it from a different perspective, I would be this or I would be that thanks to this change. Sometimes I would question myself and wonder where would I be if I had never come here? Who knows, I know I did changed due to this experience, but that is what life is about. Adapt to changes, learn from bad experience and try to be better every day.

Texting

I think texting has made the way we communicate much easier; it’s an easy and convenient way to keep in touch with others. You can easily communicate with someone without having to make a call, especially when you are in school or at work, texting makes it simple. But, in the other hand it can also be a dangerous habit… how many times have you seen people talking or texting while driving?? Sometimes we don’t realize the risks we are taking by doing this, but it can be as dangerous as driving under the influence. We can easily get distracted when sending a text, those few seconds we take our eyes off the road can lead to an accident. I used to do this a lot, I would always be texting while driving…. there was a few times where I could have crashed just for a simple text. I even got a ticket once for talking on the phone while driving. Texting is a great tool, it’s definitely a great way of communication, but we just need to be responsible and make good use of it.

Reality Shows

Reality Shows

I don’t really watch that much television, I usually would sit down and watch television whenever there is a sport event, or when my favorite soccer team is playing. Reality shows? I am not a big fan of reality shows, although I have seen these types of shows are taking over. I think is almost impossible for you not to come across a reality show if you start swapping channels. The only reality shows that I like are some that are air in national geographic and discovery channel, I really enjoy watching the documentaries they show. But, in general I don’t think these reality shows send a good or positive message to its audience. I believe that we can be influence by what we watch, and a lot of these shows are just pointless. For example, the Jersey shore show from what I have seen, it just shows people partying and drinking every single night, girls hooking up with different boys. What good message can a teenager get from these types of shows? In fact, in my opinion all they can get from it is the wrong idea that this behavior is acceptable.

TV companies know that with these type of shows they would get their ratings up, so they would rather show these than shows that they know are not going to win them audience. I personally think most of these shows such as the Kardashians (my gf loves this show, so I have seen it more than once), or those MTV shows are all scripted, they just want its audience to believe everything is happening in the show is true, when in “reality” is not. I believe these types of shows are not doing any good to society; they are just meeting their goals of having high ratings and making money out of it, they don’t care about the consequences that these behaviors present on their shows can have in a teenager.

I don’t think I would be easily influence by what type of shows I watch, but I know there are many people out there who definitely would. So, I would say that for the most part I try to avoid these shows, because I just find them pointless and sometimes stupid to watch. And like the old saying says “you are what you eat” so maybe for some people we can say that they are what they watch because they can easily get influence by television.

My first burger

Fast Food

I was born in another country, in a small town so fast food was never really part of our culture. My mom would always cook something fresh for us; we were used to eating pure homemade food almost every day.  We would rarely go eat to a restaurant, and even if we did it would be something that was fresh. We didn’t have any fast food restaurant in our town; in fact I have never been to a McDonalds or any kind of fast food restaurant until I came to this country. I can totally see the difference between my hometown and the style of living here in the U.S. Here, we live a really fast pace style of living, and logically the easiest thing to do for most people is to just drive to a drive thru where you now you can get something in less than five minutes.  I still remember the first time I had a hamburger from McDonalds, I must say that it was delicious. We were on our way to my uncle’s house; we had just got here from Mexico.  I remember I was tired after being in a bus for almost 38 hours, we stopped somewhere near San Diego to have something quick since we were all super hungry. That’s when I was first introduced to McDonalds; I remember telling my uncle to get me a Big Mac. Can you imagine the feeling of trying this tasty looking hamburger? I totally loved it specially their fries, I thought they were just delicious.

Fast food became part of my culture, especially because I got a job at a McDonalds when I was a junior in High School. I would literally eat McDonalds every single day at work since I would work six days per week. I worked there for two years until I graduated from High School, so for two whole years I ate McDonalds. At first I would always get Big Macs or double cheese burgers, but I got tired of it. I knew that eating fast food was not healthy at all, but it was kind of addicting and convenience. I still consume fast food every now and then, but rarely go to McDonalds anymore. I usually go to subway, especially because there is subway right across work. But, since a couple months I being trying to pack a lunch to work to avoid eating out, I don’t think is a good habit to eat that much fast food, but I know that sometimes we have no other choice because we are always running from one place to another and don’t have that much time in our hands.

Summary of my life

I was born and raised in Mexico until the age of 15. I come from a family of six, two older brothers and my twin sister. I am the youngest of the family since I was born twenty minutes after my sister was born, the funny thing is that my parents didn’t know that they were having twins, so they were kind of shock when I  showed up. My childhood was somewhat difficult because you can say that we were raised without my dad because since I was born he would always come to the U.S. to work. He would only go back for 2 or 3 weeks during the whole year and there were times where he would take longer to go back. I remember I would always see my friends with their dad and this was something that made me sad. I was already used to only see him for a short period of time, but then finally after like 10 years he had requested for residency for all of us they approved it. So at the age of 15 I was forced to come to this country, I remember I was not happy at all even though we were going to finally be all together. I remember coming into high school, I really hated it. I just wanted to go back to my old friends, my old school. Little by little I started making new friends; the only hard thing was the language. I remember I would get frustrated because I didn’t understand a single word at first. There was always that one person who would always make fun of you when you made mistakes trying to say something. So, for the most part I would just go, do my work and I would rarely talk to anybody. I finished high school and decided to attend Oxnard College. I was attending college when I started working a full time job. I started to do bad in some of my classes so I just decided to stop for a while. The idea was just to stop only one or two semesters. A mistake I made because these two semesters became four years until last semester that I finally decided go back to school.
Currently I am still working a full time job, but trying to manage my time properly to try to do good in my classes. My idea is to get my AA and go from there, I know that education is the only key to get somewhere in life. I only have a few more classes to go to be able to graduate from college. Besides working and attending college I try to keep myself busy doing things that I love. Definitely something that I really enjoy doing is playing soccer, I have played soccer all my life and the other would be music. I can spend hours just listening to music, it takes my mind to other places. Whenever I need sometime for myself or just to relax I just put on my headphones and forget about everything.

In the future I would like transfer to a four year university to get a degree that is going to get me a better paying job.
